Bank Account Levies

Bank Account Levies

Bank account levies are a legal action that allows a creditor to freeze and withdraw funds directly from a debtor’s bank account to satisfy an unpaid debt, typically after obtaining a court judgment. Once the levy is issued, the bank must hold the funds for a certain period, giving the account holder time to contest it.

Levies can cause significant financial disruption, especially if the funds are needed for essentials like rent or food. However, some accounts and types of income—such as Social Security, disability benefits, or child support—may be exempt from seizure. If served with a levy, individuals can challenge it in court, negotiate with the creditor, or work with an attorney to protect their rights and possibly recover exempt funds.
